Partner Highlight- April 2018
This month Habitat for Humanity Texas is proud to highlight our partnership with CenterPoint Energy.
Centerpoint Energy’s vision is to lead the nation in delivering energy, service and value. CenterPoint Energy and their employees are committed to making a positive difference in the communities they serve. In 2017, their employees contributed 146,861 volunteer hours to the community, valued at $3.5 million. Community development is one of the three strategic giving pillars and focus areas for community relations at CenterPoint Energy. They support affordable and sustainable housing, revitalization, economic development, energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. CenterPoint Energy has been a supporter of Habitat for Humanity for several years through their natural gas distribution service territories in six states.
Habitat for Humanity Texas serves as a trusted community partner serving 75 Habitats in over 80 communities in Texas. Tommy Fikac, Marketing in New Braunfels explains why he is a strong supporter of Habitat for Humanity. “A common misconception is that Habitat for Humanity gives away houses. The truth is that Habitat affiliates finance affordable loans, and the partner families have to invest ‘sweat equity’ into building their own home and the houses of others. The slogan that is used, ‘a hand up, not a hand out’, is an accurate statement of the mission of Habitat for Humanity. CenterPoint Energy employees have always demonstrated their willingness to offer ‘a hand up’ whenever they can.”
CenterPoint Energy generously gives to Habitat for Humanity through corporate and community giving. Employees often donate their time and talent to local Habitat build projects and ReStore activities. Whether it is constructing a home or cooking for volunteers, hosting an exhibitor booth or hosting a session at Habitat Texas’ annual statewide Lone Star Summit, CenterPoint Energy employees enjoy supporting Habitat for Humanity every year.
Tommy Fikac also stated the reasons for supporting Habitat Texas’ Lone Star Summit. “As a longtime supporter of Habitat for Humanity, CenterPoint Energy values the opportunity to partner with the 75 affiliates throughout Texas, and help provide affordable housing within our communities. The Lone Star Summit gives us the quality time needed to build our relationships with Habitat staff and volunteers.”
Fun Facts! CenterPoint Energy’s energy efficiency programs reduced customers’ carbon footprint by over 300,000 metric tons in 2017, equivalent to removing 42,000 cars from the road for one year. Since 2002, CenterPoint Energy blood drives have collected 68,554 units of blood, enough to save 230,367 lives – equal to every resident of New Braunfels and their two best out-of-town friends.
