About Course

Habitat for Humanity ReStores are independently owned thrift stores operated by local affiliates that accept donations and sell home improvement items to the public at a fraction of the retail price. Proceeds from ReStore operations are used to help build strength, stability, self-reliance and shelter in local communities throughout Texas and around the world. Habitat for Humanity Texas is offering a five-week Certificate of Retail Management to equip individuals to manage and operate a ReStore beginning January 31, 2022. This program is designed to prepare individuals working in the thrift retail industry in areas of supervision, marketing, finances, and business planning, encompassing several essential elements needed for effective management and communication. Upon successful completion, participants will earn a Certificate of Retail Management and 4.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from Habitat for Humanity Texas. This course benefits individuals who want to learn about retail operations, while developing leadership skills and techniques. Session Topics: Leadership Human Resources (subsection: Volunteer management) Merchandising General Finances and Budgeting (subsection: Loss prevention and safety) Marketing Instructor: Bobbie Moore, Senior Lecturer at Texas State University, has over ten years of retail experience with a wealth of knowledge regarding retail management. She has worked with JcPenny, Saks Fifth Ave, and Liz Claiborne Outlet, in addition to directing the Fashion Merchandising Career Forum. She also has fifteen years of teaching experience and is certified in online teaching! Course Format: This program is divided into five week long modules, including prerecorded lectures and assignments released on Monday, followed by live Zoom presentations and discussions on Friday from 9:00 am-12:00 pm CST. Participants have from Monday until Friday’s session to watch the lectures and complete the assignments for that week.

Welcome to Certificate of Retail Management

Week One (1/31-2/4/2022)?

This course focuses on the development of leadership skills and addresses the complexities and challenges of leadership. Through self-assessments, readings, lectures, and assignments participants gain an understanding of effective leadership approaches and are provided with opportunities to practice new leadership behaviors.

Week Two (2/07-11/2022)?

Learn the skills for human resource planning, recruiting, training, compensation and building strong employer-employee relations. Course will focus on recruiting and developing a strong internal team and volunteer acquisition and management. Learn how to attract and retain the right talent for your organization.

Week Three (2/14-18/2022)?

Learn to use accounting, budgeting, and other financial management tools to create and analyze financial information for successful business operations. Define and understand how to impact the profit model. This course includes loss prevention strategies and emphasizes the importance of work place safety practices.

Week Four (2/21-25/2022)?

Learn how a successful retail manager uses merchandising skills to create a profitable store. Understand the basics of merchandising – having the right products at the right time, at the right price and at the right place. Use merchandising to attract customers and differentiate yourself from the competition. Participants will recognize the impact merchandising has on retail sales and customer loyalty.

Week Five (2/28-3/4/2022)?

Define what marketing is, how it can be used to reach customers, and why it is important for your retail operations. Learn basic marketing techniques - including how to utilize social media and various online resources. Develop strategies for maximizing internal and external business communication including advertising, sales, and sales promotion.


  • Each of the sessions will have both asynchronous and virtual components. There will be a short video lecture (5-8 minutes), readings, and assignments/worksheets for each course, and then the instructor will facilitate a virtual course via Zoom on Fridays from 9:00-12:00 CST that will allow the participants to engage in shared learning with one another.
  • To receive your Certificate of Retail Management, you must complete all five prerecorded lectures, submit the weekly assignments on time, and attend the live sessions each Friday.
  • Participants must have access to a computer, microphone, and webcam during the weekly live discussions.
