Dear Habitat family,

I am heartened by the resilience and resourcefulness of our Habitat community. Even during these challenging times, we are building homes, community, and hope.

For so many Texans, sheltering in place means living in an unsafe home. It is more important than ever that you continue your work so that vulnerable Texans can safely weather this storm.

That’s why we are offering the Lone Star Summer Series, a learning and gathering opportunity for Habitat for Humanity affiliates to gain knowledge, community, and experience. The series includes 8-week courses with certification, like the Certificate in Grantwriting, and one-time webinars in all Habitat’s job areas including construction, finance, homebuyer services, fundraising, and volunteers. Learn more.

We’ve designed the Lone Star Summer Series so that Habitat affiliates can sign up for the whole series or purchase individual classes. To make things fun, your Habitat affiliate can participate as a team and the teams that complete the most courses will get recognized when we conclude in August.

There are some terrific opportunities for sponsors and virtual trade show exhibitors to take part and support Habitat’s statewide work.

Since the Covid-19 crisis hit our state in March, Habitat for Humanity Texas has responded to the urgent needs of our 72 local Habitat affiliates statewide. Overnight we developed webinars on crisis communications, financial forecasting and contingency planning. Each webinar brought together 90+ people from Lubbock to Longview to learn how to modify vital home repair programs or access federal funds to retain staff.

We continue to help affiliates with mortgage origination, budget revisions, and accessing vital funds. We are listening to and taking part in national and statewide conversations about the needs of nonprofits and the communities we serve. We are analyzing federal COVID-19 legislation and forming collaborations with like-minded organizations for what will be a very challenging Texas legislative session next year.

These are challenging times, but we are getting through this one day at a time. One way Habitat for Humanity Texas is supporting you is through the 50 courses that make up the Lone Star Summer Series. Grab a cool glass of lemonade and sign up! We’ll kick off on June 15th!

With gratitude,

Amy Ledbetter Parham
