Habitat for Humanity of Smith County

In April 2017, Habitat for Humanity of Smith County had their inaugural event, Playhouses on the Plaza. The event consisted of an online and live auction to sell playhouses donated by their builders. The playhouses are on display on Tyler’s downtown plaza for an entire week- the visibility and publicity for Smith County is fantastic. They had people from all over East Texas come to Tyler to see them! The result was an outstanding success resulting in eight playhouse builders (the maximum capacity) committing for the 2018 event and three more committed for 2019.

Along with this successful event, Habitat for Humanity of Smith County received a $150,000 grant from the Texas Veterans Commission in September 2017. They will be using the grant to make repairs on the homes of veterans through their critical repair program.

In the past three months alone, Smith County has been able to complete 23 critical repairs serving 36 adults and 6 children. In this calendar year, they have completed 86 repair projects, 25 of which were for veterans with a projection to complete 115 repairs by the end of December. Those are quite the numbers!

Habitat Texas is proud to highlight Habitat for Humanity of Smith County for the month of October 2017 recognizing their outstanding achievements in fundraising, grant writing, and build numbers. Keep up the great work!
