Habitat for Humanity ReStores are independently owned thrift stores operated by local affiliates that accept donations and sell home improvement items to the public at a fraction of the retail price. Proceeds from ReStore operations are used to help build strength, stability, self-reliance and shelter in local communities throughout Texas and around the world. Habitat for Humanity Texas is offering a six-week Certificate of Retail Management to prepare individuals to manage and operate a ReStore. This program is designed for individuals working in the thrift retail industry in areas of supervision, marketing, finances, and business planning, encompassing several essential elements needed for effective management and communication. 

Habitat Texas’ Certificate of Retail Management will occur over six weeks, meeting each Friday from 9 am-Noon CST Upon successful completion, participants will earn a Certificate of Retail Management from Habitat for Humanity Texas.

This course benefits individuals who want to learn about resale, retail operations, while developing leadership skills and techniques.

Description

The Retail Management Program is an exciting course that will prepare retail leaders to run successful
businesses in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. The curriculum will build and enhance skills that are
critical to the success of retail management. Courses of study will include leadership, human resource
management, business analytics, merchandising and marketing. The program is highly interactive and
challenges participants to apply new information to real world situations through group discussions,
assignments, case studies and projects.
Leadership
This course focuses on the development of leadership skills and addresses the complexities and
challenges of leadership. Through self-assessments, readings, lectures, and assignments participants
gain an understanding of effective leadership approaches and are provided with opportunities to
practice new leadership behaviors.
Human Resources Management
Learn the skills for human resource planning, recruiting, training, compensation and building strong
employer-employee relations. Course will focus on recruiting and developing a strong internal team and
volunteer acquisition and management. Learn how to attract and retain the right talent for your
organization.
Financial Management and Budgeting
Learn to use accounting, budgeting, and other financial management tools to create and analyze
financial information for successful business operations. Define and understand how to impact the profit
model. This course includes loss prevention strategies and emphasizes the importance of work place
safety practices.
Merchandising
Learn how a successful retail manager uses merchandising skills to create a profitable store. Understand
the basics of merchandising – having the right products at the right time, at the right price and at the
right place. Use merchandising to attract customers and differentiate yourself from the competition.
Participants will recognize the impact merchandising has on retail sales and customer loyalty.
Marketing
Define what marketing is, how it can be used to reach customers, and why it is important for your retail
operations. Learn basic marketing techniques – including how to utilize social media and various online
resources. Develop strategies for maximizing internal and external business communication including
advertising, sales, and sales promotion.
